For Istvanski – Warning: this contains the c-word!

April 22, 2007

Continuing The Damned theme as part of my tribute to their colourful see-saw of 30 years in music. Here’s a classic piece of Captain Sensible at his most rude (apart from weeing on the audience at the beginning of the previous clip in case you hadn’t noticed). I lost a better version of this particular clip a few months ago which was the un-edited version (it got kicked off youtube for bad violence/language) which included him going quite wild with the mic stand at the beginning and lashing out at the dumbly agog US crowd who just didn’t know what had come to town and hit them (apart from a very heavy mic stand about the ears of course). The thing I like about this piece of footage is that he is so angry (and prob a little inebriated) but just picks up the song without warning and then plays the most magnificent solo. The man’s a bloody genius. Love him hate him – I’ve always admired him. And in a really childish way I find his treatment of the audience absolutely hilarious. It’s vintage Sensible gold. Don’t watch it if you don’t like bad language.

I’ll have to watch this when I get home, as I can’t seem to access YouTube stuff on the work’s PCs. I’m guessing this is prior to Sensible getting hospitalised.<br/>Someone on Munterspace has posted camphone footage of one of the songs performed at the 100 Club.<br/><a href=’http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=28691025&blogID=256042039&MyToken=8e4ff0ae-ff5a-4e0c-b9ae-7c376e9ad2a7′ rel=’nofollow’>Looky here</a>.

    Ps: Hospitalised? Rock n Roll.

Ister – yes – they did Problem Child quite early on I thought.<br/><br/>That munterspace footage is prob from that really annoying 8 foot tall man with glasses that kept standing in front of me and ignoring everybody’s pleas to move out of the way. I banged into him a few times on purpose.

"I banged into him a few times on purpose".<br/><br/>Could’ve been worse. You could’ve given him that "Death Stare" of yours.

  6. So that’s why Peter Crouch missed a game.

Ister – ‘death stare’ – that’s so unfair! My death stares are legendary – that was just mild I can assure you! Did you see the footage yet?<br/><br/>Dickley – que?

  8. The bloke you bashed…Liverpool striker.<br/><br/>A little research reveals that the Capt. Sensible Waldorf gig was one year after Rotten and Co’s cultural exchange visit…a hard act to follow.

Dickley – Yes I know who Peter Crouch is but I’m having an Olive moment – can’t make the connection I’m afriad – you’ll have to elaborate. I think The Damned have always done a better job than the Pistols on most accounts (they are certainly better musicians) although John Lydon is a genius. Public Image is one of the best songs of all time as is Anarchy In the UK despite it sounding rather slow now – or slower than I remember although we only had disco and Clifford T Ward to compare it to at the time so I’m not surprised. Oh god – I think I’m becoming a music bore.

Footage? Footage of your Death Stare you mean? I experienced that first hand from you when I suggested that I buy a copy of that live CD and copy it for everyone.<br/>Brrrr! Never again.<br/><br/>I did see the live footage of that Waldorf moment, it was great fun to watch. I’m sure the whole concert is available on bootleg DVD, I’ll try and hunt it down.<br/><br/>Oh no…I’ve mentioned bootlegs again. <br/>Oo-er, I’m done for.

  11. "….that really annoying 8 foot tall man with glasses that kept standing in front of me and ignoring everybody’s pleas to move out of the way. I banged into him a few times on purpose."<br/><br/>It immediately occured to me that you might have knobbled the Liverpool striker. OK not very funny.<br/><br/>As for Lydon et al I thought part of their charm was the lack of musical ability? Art brut so to speak. Not sure what that has to do with The Damned. I think part of my trouble is I don’t know what I’m talking about. I should probably shut up really but once I get started explaining something it becomes a sort of compulsion.

Ister – oh dear – I wasn’t even aware of my cd copy ‘death stare’ I sincerely hope you are joking. I thought you meant the one when I nearly got knocked over by a man by the bar. Oh no – was it really that bad? Surely not. I’m a happy soul you know. Yes – I meant the Waldorf footage not me cracking the lens! Here’s another death stare for mentioning bootlegs – copy me in when you get hold of it won’t you?!<br/><br/>Dickley – I think you’ve gone a bit left field sir – here – have a special Romo ‘death-stare’ on me. You do know what you are talking about – I know what you mean about un-musicianship – it’s a bit how I feel about the Slits – whom I lOVE by the way.

  13. Not the Death Stare! The Slits….yes I remember them. And The Castrators. That’s around the time everything went pear-shaped….for me anyway.

Oh lordy, if I’d known about the death stare, I would never have answered question 5 the way I did…

  15. Howesy permalink

Also, I reckon Sensible should be our ambassador in the States…

  16. rockmother permalink

Howeser – you are let off on this occasion – I thought your answer to infamous question 5 was hilarious. And yes – it would be rather good to see El Capitano turn up in the US and call Bush a sh*tcu*t on national tv wouldn’t it because that’s exactly what Bush is. Although I’m not saying that word again as it really isn’t befitting to a lady. C*nt or even c*nting hell fine but sh*tcu*t is just to harsh – even by my louche standards. I would love to see that though.

"…I’m not saying that word again as it really isn’t befitting to a lady."<br/><br/>George Bush is a lady?!?<br/><br/>Well I never.

    Ister – yeah – he’s a namby big girl’s blouse!
